Welcome
This week the John Botz Limited Edition print “Laguna Beach II” welcomes you to the Museum Editions West website.
“Laguna Beach (CA) artist John Botz's passion for the gentler side of Americana - white wicker chairs, lattice fences and fringed awnings, as the gist for his artistic mill - has guided him though major changes in his life throughout the past eleven years.
Originally a buyer of a West Coast-based women's apparel chain, he balanced the hectic pace of his work by filling in his spare moments and weekends by designing fabrics and cards. The creative side won out.
Botz now designs fabrics for New York's Brunschwig & Fils, as well as cards and stationery for the well-known firm of T.V. Allen. And, of course, his acrylic paintings are the focus of his work. "When I was young, I always painted," says the quite-spoken Botz, "I suppose I just gradually worked into full-time painting."
The many faces of Americana have always been a part of his life: Botz grew up in a small resort town on Long Island, receiving his education in Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C. While in Washington as a high school student, Botz met art teacher Gertrude Brown, who was instrumental in helping him develop his own unique style. The subsequently self-taught artist then went on to create works that have reminded some observers of Dufy and Matisse.
Botz discovered the charms of Laguna Beach soon after his arrival in California and visited there on weekends. Eventually, his relationship with painting and Laguna Beach both became full-time. There he opened the John Botz Gallery eight years ago and says he's "appreciative of having the opportunity to live and work in Laguna Beach, as it is one of America's most beautiful resort areas.” -C.
